Sponsorship Licenses for Immigaration
Immigration update, submitted by Kate Russell, Author of 101 tips for employers
Tiers 2 and 5 of the points based immigration system will open to migrant applications at the end of November. Tier 2 relates to skilled workers, for example, teachers and engineers, and tier 5 relates to youth mobility and temporary workers, for example, musicians coming to the UK to play in a concert. Once a licence has been granted, a sponsor will be able to issue certificates of sponsorship to those migrants he wishes to admit. Migrants will then have to seek entry clearance before being allowed to enter the UK.
Applications for a sponsorship licence must be made online. Within ten working days of the application having been made the would-be employer has to submit supporting documents to the UK Borders and Immigration Agency (Borders). Guidance on supporting documentation is provided on their website in the form of three lists, A to C. List A details the mandatory documents; list B provides for mandatory documents where applications are being made by certain types of organisation in certain sectors; list C details additional supporting documents. The fee paid is determined by the size and/or type of organisation.
Borders anticipates that once it has got past the first rush of applications it will take about four weeks to process each application.
