Julian Beever; Incredible 3D chalk drawings by the pavement Picasso
Julian Beever, the Pavement Picasso
Julian Beever is an English artist who has been creating chalk drawings on pavement since the mid-1990s that create the illusion of three dimensions when viewed from the right location.
These chalk drawings which are 3 dimensional optical illusions, are created using a projection called anamorphosis and appear to defy the laws of perspective.
When viewed from the wrong angle it is difficult to see what is drawn, but when viewed fro the correct angle, the drawing come to life in a incredible mind-boggling creation, which must be seen to be believed.
Besides this pavement art, Julian Beever also paints murals and replicas of the works of masters, oil paintings and collages. Julian works as a freelance performance artist commissioned by companies. You will find his contact detail at the bottom of this page.

Please remember that the drawings that you are viewing are drawn with chalk
and they are flat on the floor. The illusion of depth and 3 dimensions
has been created by the skill of the artist, Julian Beever.
In this drawing called “The Dungeon”, a spectator is asked to kneel
at the side of the image to increase the illusion of perspective.
Of course, there is no hole in the ground,
it’s a work of art.

Here again, a spectator is used to enhance the illusion.
Batman and Robin come to the rescue.

Here, Julian is poised to dive in.
If you look closely, you can see the square outline
of the pavement slabs just blow the diving board.

The most incredible drawing of a Coke bottle I’ve ever seen.
I still find it difficult to believe that this is a chalk drawing which is flat on the floor.

Now for an insight into how this incredible art is achieved.
In this image, seen from the incorrect angle,
it’s difficult to imagine what is happening.
If you look at the far side of the drawing, you’ll see a camera on a tripod.
Here’s what you see through Julian Beever’s camera lens…
Again, Julian Beever uses his body to create the illusion of depth.

Here again, a drawing shown from two different angles…
